Sankhya Kārika
Karika 06
सामान्यतस्तु दृष्टादतीन्द्रियाणां प्रतीतिरनुमानात्। तस्मादपिचासिद्धं परोक्षमाप्तागमात् सिद्धम् ॥६॥
sāmānyatastu dr̥ṣṭādatīndriyāṇāṁ pratītiranumānāt। tasmādapicāsiddhaṁ parōkṣamāptāgamāt siddham ॥6॥
[सामान्यतः तु दृष्टात् अति इन्द्रियाणां प्रतीतिः अनुमानात् । तस्मात् अपि च असिद्धं परोक्षम् आप्त आगमात् सिद्धम्॥
sāmānyataḥ = ordinary topics are grasped; tu = but; dr̥ṣṭāt = through direct perception; ati indriyāṇāṁ = for things beyond the grasp of senses; pratītiḥ = precedence is; anumānāt = through inference; tasmāt = from it; api = even; ca = also; asiddhaṁ = not established; parōkṣam = is beyond human intellect; āpta āgamāt = through trustworthy scriptures; siddham = through trustworthy scriptures;]
Ordinary topics are grasped through direct perception. But for those topics that are beyond the grasp of senses, precedence is to establish them through inference. When it cannot be established even through inference, it is beyond human intellect. Then it is established through trustworthy scriptures.
