The wise sage Vyasa remarked at the beginning of his great epic Mahabharata,

"Exertion to gain wealth is not a sin, the natural methods advocated by the Vedas are not a sin, studying is not a sin, and practice and austerity are not a sin. These become sins only when they are abused."1
He concludes his majestic epic with a poignant plea to humanity,
"Thousands of mothers and fathers, hundreds of sons and wives, arise in the world and depart. There are thousands of occasions for joy and hundreds of occasions for fear. These affect only him that is ignorant, but never him that is wise. With uplifted arms I am crying aloud, but nobody hears me! From dharma is wealth as also pleasure. Should Dharma not be pursued, then? Dharma should not be cast aside for pleasure, fear, or greed. Indeed, One should not abandon the dharma even for the sake of a life. The dharma is eternal, but not the pleasure or the pain. Jiva is eternal, but not the cause for which being is invested with a body."2

Between these two remarks of Vyasa is the entire epic of Mahabharata, the knowledge of the four Vedas, the insight from all of Upanishads, the wisdom of Vedic darshanas, and the means to attain purushartha, the four aspired goals of human existence, i.e. Dharma (righteousness), Artha (material wellbeing), Kāma (desire) and Mōksha (liberation).
