Karika 29
स्वालक्षण्यं वृत्तिस्त्रयस्य सैषा भवत्यसामान्या। सामान्यकरणवृत्तिः प्राणाद्या वायवः पञ्च ॥२९॥
Having their own characteristics, the mental acts are of three types (satwa, rajas, tamas). They only transform to become common and uncommon instruments of the volition such as life forces (prāṇa), five in number.
Here not only mental acts (vr̥ttiḥ) are classified as three in number based on their character. So, we can assume them to be of type satwa, rajas, and tamas.
Five 'prāṇas' are introduced as 'instruments of volition' (karaṇa vr̥ttiḥ). The 'prāṇas' is such an important and common concept in Indian metaphysics Iswara Krishna does not elaborate it further. The 'prāṇa' is subtle life force that regulate the activities of the body. Five types of prāṇa are prāna, apāna, samāna, vyāna, udāna.
prāna = life force that draws the air in
apāna = life force that expulse the air out
samāna = life force that balances, diffused throughout the body
udāna = life force that moves upward especially towards head
vyāna = life force that helps to expel unwanted material out of the body.]
